• Challenge

  As China becomes an increasingly important player in the global economy, English skills are an indisputable competitive advantage for any individual. Knowledge of English is a crucial leg up particularly for children in rural areas, who otherwise will have little chance of seeking solid employment opportunities in the future.

• Solution

  In the summer of 2001, Nanjing University students partnered with volunteers from various international universities to teach English language and culture in rural Chinese villages. Over the past six years, the teams have worked in the rural areas of Anhui province, carrying out intensive English language exchange that expanded rural children’s horizons, and heightened their interest in learning and culture. Each year, the project targeted new rural areas, recruited more volunteers and opened up new forms of education that was customized to the local students’ needs and standards of curriculum.
