  • Challenge

Throughout its vast history, China has created numerous works of art and entertainment, in the form of songs, plays, operas, ballads, and so on. Many of the works have been lost in time, and one of the few remaining cultural relics that is at risk of extinction is a ritual opera called the Mu Lian Xi, originating from Huizhou Province.

  • Solution

The group’s mission is to research and examine this piece of art that has now been brought to the edges of extinction, to trace back its thousand year history, and to revive and protect it. After initial research and interviews with scholars, our team’s adventure begins with volunteers traveling to seven remaining performance venues to interview each of the senior actors and actresses, creating an in-depth profile of each character. We will also interview opera script collectors and explore each stage venue’s history and origin. Through actively recruiting and collaborating with senior actors, we hope to initiate a formal revival of this celebrated ritual opera, in the process creating recordings and broadcasts to promote its artistic value. All our research and materials will be presented in an organized and detailed report to the government, which will continue to fan the flame of MuLian’s heritage.
