  • Challenge

From adopting his first disabled orphan in 1964, merchant Wang Yu from Fuyang city in Yingshang County has voluntarily adopted 532 handicapped orphans throughout the next several decades. Despite facing shortages of funds and other difficulties, Mr. Wang never gave up providing care for his children, and today the Wang Yu Disabled Orphan Home has 214 children, among them 113 handicapped. However, due to financial difficulty, the Home is now facing risk of closure.

  • Solution

Over the past 4 years, Anhui University has mobilized student teams to host summer outreach events at the Wang Yu Home. However, this is only a short-term aid. This year, we would like to address the problem more deeply by formalizing and expanding our education curriculum, as well as working with leaders to analyze the current schooling system and improve fundraising strategies.
We will first try to understand different aspects of the children’s educational needs, and work with leaders to identify gaps in their current curriculum. After initial research and inquiry, our team has already planned a series of counseling and cultural programs, covering classes such as arts and culture, literature, military training, esteem-building and self empowerment. We will also carry out various public relations activities to raise awareness of the children’s needs, and solicit enterprises through fund-raising events. Through this project, we also hope to enhance the spirit of social responsibility among college students, and solidify our understanding of disabled children in society.
